Former learner Brenda Warner attended 2 terms before being accepted at the University of Northampton for fine art. Brenda took one of her completed 2 sculptures, Patti, to her interview as an example of art work she’d done in between her Art A levels, and her entry into university, and was told that her sculpture had ‘nice proportions’ and was ‘well done’.
Brenda says that her experience with 3 dimensional viewing of the human body was useful in her general approach to life drawing classes at uni (example below). ‘It is difficult to quantify but the sculpture experience was good for me, bearing in mind that we will only have 8 weeks of life drawing and painting in my 3 years at uni. It’s important to have an all around view of a person in order to produce a good life drawing.’
Brenda especially appreciated the smallness of my class. Some of her life drawing classes had 20 students or more and it was often difficult to see the model. She has just finished her 1st year at university and still enjoys looking at the plaster male figure she produced at one of my plaster workshops (Brenda can be seen in the Plaster Workshop slide show, on the main Moodle page), and looking at her Patti figure in her garden. Both were finished in PVA to seal and protect them, yet allowing the natural colours of the materials (clay and plaster) to remain.
We wish Brenda all the best during her next 2 years at uni, and beyond.
These 2 drawings were done before taking the sculpture class
The charcoal drawing and painting were done afterwards - this year at uni.
Former learner Brian Waddelow attended one of my clay sculpture courses, and one plaster workshop, in 2008. Since then circumstances and ‘life’s lethargy’ has intervened to subdue the pursuit of further life sculpture study. ‘Being creative offers a stimulation that other activities cannot, and I miss that’ says Brian, who intends to sign up for another sculpture class in the near future. ‘I am crap at drawing (although I have a Diploma in Arts and Designs, from my art school days of long ago) but I have a natural inclination towards 3 dimensions and colour, and I enjoy producing something with my hands.’ Brian and his partner go often to art exhibitions, and like viewing public sculpture such as the Henry Moore outside of the Houses of Parliament. His favourite sculptor is Giacometti.
